It's come up more than a few times that people keep getting stuck in Cursed not from programming issues, but simply because they don't know what to do. More than a few have requested hints, and some have requested outright walk-throughs or instructions.
Now, I've always kind of intended to created a "manual" for the game, but I'm starting to think that it would be more trouble personally than it would be worth. While I'm still open to the idea, the prevalence of wikis seems to suggest that's the way to go.
But I'm not so good with the wiki-stuff.
So, looking for suggestions. Should I just write the damn help-guide? Or would someone be willing to help me set up a wiki? Or has someone already started a wiki and just hasn't told me?
How about starting a Wikia, or is that the same thing?
ReplyDeleteOr maybe you can add a general hint section in your blog that you can update as you make the game.
How to start a new wikia.
ReplyDeleteAfter starting one, try to get the testers/people who play your rag game to update it.

May as well go the wiki/wikia route; if you look at what people have done for CoC, it's fairly impressive. (It also depends on how many spoilersish things you want to put in.)
ReplyDeleteAlso there is a Wiki attached to the TFGames site, and I am sure your game has a begining of a thread their... you could just prime the pump on that one... In fact here is the address. http://tfgamessite.com/Wiki/index.php?title=Cursed
ReplyDeleteI was just hoping you could clear something up for me:
ReplyDeleteI picked the job as the secretary, and got the first promotion. However since then, when I look at the bulletin board, it says something like: "no details for promotion in this version".
Does that mean the next promotion hasn't been implemented yet? or am I just misreading it.
Don't worry about it; the community will build one for you.
ReplyDeleteI was actually thinking of asking if I could write a partial 'manual' for you. I started a thread on 4chan introducing your game to a board and discussing it. I ended up helping a lot of people that started the game, and I've played it quite a bit so I've come to understand it pretty well. I wouldn't go as far as to say I'm an expert at it or anything like that, but I could at least help with what I know. I've already started to type it up. I'll send in a first draft of it when I finish it. Hope it helps!
ReplyDeleteAs for the wiki idea, it sounds great. It'd be kind of cool to see the sort of rough guide I've started on linked to it or something.
Honestly, the biggest thing that threw me when I first played were having to right-click everything, and the parts where you have to click the room name to continue (e.g. going home from the bar.) Bolding the instructions in the intro (go to bed, check the mirror) might help, too.
ReplyDeleteI just wish I didn't have to start over for every update.
ReplyDeleteUsing the wiki from the TFgame site seems to be the most simple way. It's already up and just need to be expanded.
ReplyDeleteJust chiming in to agree with everything said above.
ReplyDeleteI'd love to see a wikia, or at least something to help me actually finish the lab. (Keys unlock the big door, but nothing else can be done).
ReplyDeleteOpening a forum for the game, too, wouldn't be abd.
I'd love that. I hate being stuck on this lab with no discernable way to figure it out
ReplyDeleteI would expect a wiki to allow you to focus more on development and less on manual writing - so everybody wins :)
ReplyDeleteIt might also be easier to let the community do the work of keeping it up to date with the information they want.
The wiki is the best way to go. Has anyone made one for us to update yet? We wouldn't want to have several at once and then have to work out which one to update.
ReplyDeleteI started one on the TFgamesite wiki but lack the knowledge to fill in all the bits and pieces that are missing
