Do We Not Like the Idea of Commissions?

Looks like the response to my commissions idea has been less than...well, anything, really. Still open for discussion, but I'm considering other methods.

For example, I'm thinking of a "collaborative" method. Basically, for each donation, you get to define some aspect of a "quickie" game. So for $20, you get to choose a TF that ends up in the game. Or something like that. And then every $100, the game gets made.

Barring that, I'm thinking of just plain begging. I don't really have anything else to offer, at least that I can think of.

  1. I think people would rather just see your main games get done than you getting distracted with little side projects. That being said, I would love to donate, but I'm not sure I'd be able to given my own financial situation. If you're still looking for donations after this summer is over and I've got my financial situation under control, I'd be happy to pitch in to help out someone who's bringing us such great games.

  2. Sorry A Man, but you have fallen right between paychecks for me this week. I will help, but I have to have some money before I can give money. =)

  3. I'm not without compassion. However, giving money to someone isn't a long term solution. What is the reason you need the money, that you are unable to currently earn yourself? Do you not make enough money to support your current life style? If I gave you $1000 would that just be fueling up the life support machine for a few more months, until it needed to be topped up again?

Or is this a crush for capital, you normaly earn enough to support your life style however you lack capital reserves to cover unexpected costs. Which because you lack the capital the only sources of quick loans are wildly expensive like credit card blances, or payday loan stores.

I don't intend to dig deeply into your private life, but I'm not sure that just giving you money is going to be a solution for your money problems, as counter intuitive as that seems.

I'l donate some, but I'd like to have a chat about what your problems might be, some advice and some cheap capital might be what you need to bump you up enough to get back where you need to be.

  4. @third comment: you suck.

@am: I think one of your problems is that you dont advertise on a broad enought audience. maybe mention your streams/games at other places.

also i dont like the idea of you getting distracted by other stuff (i like your current games). so why not make some sort of promise like this: you will work one hour (with or without stream) on cursed or trials for every X dollars donated (i know it sounds like a second job). -durah

  5. short question but i don't know where to put it. What happened to The Trials of Taihra-Firanei? Is that game dead, on hiatus or what happened to it?

  6. @chromo1418 No, no. Trials is still definitely going to be made. It's on hiatus for a while because...well, I'll make a post about it in the near future.

@durah I don't like the idea of getting distracted either, but I also don't like the idea of withholding. I'm trying to strike a balance here.

@third commenter: I don't believe you suck. I understand your motivations and questions, honestly, so I'll answer them, but I'll be understandably vague. The last couple of months have seen a variety of unexpected expenses, and while my normal job can cover the recurring expenses, the unexpected ones have made things extremely tight. Hence the asking for donations. Lately I've been thinking, however, that given the amount of time I invest into the games I make (especially Cursed), asking for donations is a viable way to continue making these games, while also being able to support myself. Once I get my unexpected expenses under control, which I'm most of the way towards in the first place, then the goal for monthly donations will be much lower than it currently is, assuming I even continue to ask for donations.

  7. You can offer a donation incentive scheme while still not withholding. Make the incentive for early release, not any release whatsoever.

Say that you'll release the next beta for a game every 10 days or 15 days or whatever pace you feel like you can make casually.

Then offer to do an early release when the donation meter hits X. If it doesn't, you still release when you said you were going to. You could do this even without extra work, if you make it clear you're just releasing the unfinished game as-is (no promises about playability).

But ultimately I think the problem you'll find is our community is too small, and a some of your closer followers have already donated to you recently and are reticent to do so again so soon. Most of us understand this hobby as good old amateur fun, and we're not used to spending money on it.
